Amnesty International Raises Alarm Over Alleged Abduction of Omoyele Sowore in Ekiti
Global rights watchdog Amnesty International has demanded an immediate investigation into the targeted attack and alleged abduction of prominent human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, in Ado-Ekiti on Friday.
According to statements from the Sowore/Magashi Presidential Election Campaign, the incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m. at a local restaurant where the team had gathered.
Witnesses reported that armed thugs, allegedly linked to political adversaries, violently stormed the establishment, vandalizing property and damaging campaign vehicles before taking Sowore away.
While civil society groups demand answers, the Ekiti State Police Command has issued a statement confirming that an altercation did take place at the eatery but dismissed the narrative that the activist was kidnapped. Security agencies state they are currently assessing the situation to clarify the full details of the encounter.
The controversial convener of the “Revolution Now” movement, Sowore spearheaded the campaign in 2019, calling for mass peaceful protests across Nigeria.
He has had a long-running battle with the Department of State Services (DSS), with the latest being his ongoing cyberbullying case filed by the Director General of the DSS over Sowore’s repeated attacks on President Bola Tinubu.
