Alleged Coup Plotter Timipre Sylva Resigns From APC, Blasts Tinubu Administration for Lacking Decency
Timipre Sylva, the man accused of planning a coup to overthrow President Bola Tinubu, has resigned from the President’s party.
In a letter addressed to the ward chairman of the All Progressives Congress APC Ward 4, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Sylva, who fled Nigeria in the wake of the discovery of the alleged coup plot, said he consulted widely with family members, associates, and colleagues before taking the decision.
Sylva has a treason charge pending against him in Nigeria and is accused of bankrolling the coup attempt.
The former APC chieftain blamed the systemic decay in the party’s indecision to call it quits. “It is deeply saddening to witness how the ideals we espoused have been so thoroughly and unrecognisably thwarted,” he stated, adding, “I cannot, in all good conscience, continue to belong to a party whose leaders believe that ‘all is fair in politics; and have consistently demonstrated that belief in practice.”
Sylva, who has had allegations of mass corruption trailing him since leaving office as governor of Bayelsa State and later as Minister of Petroleum Resources cited the lack of decency and morality in human endeavor, attacking the Tinubu administration of being guided by such vices. “The present Government, formed under the banner of the APC we once loved, has disappointed the vast majority of Nigerians. And one can see neither a credible attempt nor any possibility of a revamp. I am therefore left with no other choice than to jettison a floundering ship whose fate appears to have been sealed by its irredeemable load of iniquities.”
He expressed optimism that Nigerians will vote differently in the coming elections.
