2027 Elections: Rights Group Demands Action Against Fadahunsi, Shekwolo, and Buba Over Political Incitement
ABUJA, NIGERIA—The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Nigeria Police Force to immediately prosecute top politicians and public officials accused of making inflammatory statements capable of inciting violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a strongly worded press statement released on Sunday, September 6, 2026, the prominent civil society group warned that continuous delays in taking decisive action could derail Nigeria’s democratic stability.
HURIWA stressed that repeated warnings by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies will remain ineffective unless high-profile individuals face real legal consequences.
The Three High-Profile Incitement Cases Under Scrutiny
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, specifically spotlighted three prominent political figures whose pending cases are raising serious concerns about the impartial enforcement of Nigeria’s electoral laws.
The group highlighted high-profile figures like Francis Fadahunsi, the Osun East lawmaker, over a viral video prior to the August 15 Osun State governorship election, allegedly calling on APC supporters to retaliate against Accord Party members in Ilesa.
Although the lawmaker was invited by the police following public outrage, the group insists that a police invitation must not become a substitute for prosecution and that the senator’s subsequent denials or explanations should not halt an active investigation.
HURIWA also called attention to Samuel Shekwolo, the Kuje Area Council chairman who was captured in a widely circulated video reportedly threatening Kuje residents who did not support the APC. The group says the police must publicly explain the current status of this case.
Similar demands have been made of law enforcement regarding Sainna Buba, Borno State Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Youth and Sports Development, who was seen on camera allegedly threatening opposition supporters with punishment if they failed to support the ruling party.
The rights group expressed deep concern that security agencies continue to issue empty rhetorical warnings while the public sees zero evidence of prosecution in high-profile incitement cases.
HURIWA warned that selective enforcement creates a dangerous perception that political connections offer protection from accountability.
“If incitement is a criminal offence, the law must apply equally to everybody, regardless of political party, position, or influence. Nigerians should not be left with the impression that political affiliation determines who is investigated, arrested, or prosecuted,” the group stated.
Preventing 2027 From Becoming a “Battlefield”
As political maneuvering intensifies across the country, HURIWA called on the Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), INEC, and the National Peace Committee to act decisively before inflammatory rhetoric escalates into physical violence and loss of life.
