US Embassy Issues Nigeria Ebola Health Alert After Imported Case From Uganda

The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has issued an urgent health alert following the confirmation of a rare Bundibugyo virus disease (Ebola) case in the country.

On October 20, Nigerian health authorities reported that an individual who recently travelled by air from Uganda tested positive for the virus. The Nigerian Ministry of Health is actively conducting contact tracing to contain any potential spread.

Ebola is a severe, rare, and often fatal haemorrhagic fever illness, prompting immediate precautionary guidelines for residents and travellers.

In response to the situation, the embassy outlined several critical safety protocols. It urged monitoring of anyone who has recently traveled to an area experiencing an Ebola outbreak for 21 days and urged individuals who believe they are at risk and are experiencing symptoms consistent with Ebola to contact their healthcare provider for guidance before presenting for in-person care.

The embassy emphasized that travelers should continue taking prescribed malaria prophylaxis.

Because malaria symptoms closely mimic those of Ebola, staying on prevention helps prevent unnecessary health scares.
