NPC Launches 2026 Digital Birth Registration to Boost National Identity

Nigeria’s National Population Commission (NPC) has officially rolled out its 2026 digital birth registration and vital statistics services across Nigeria.

NPC Executive Chairman, Aminu Yusuf, says every Nigerian child deserves a national identity, declaring that “no child should be left behind” under the new digital drive.

Bridging the Birth Registration Gap in Nigeria

Nigeria currently struggles with low birth registration coverage, performing below the West and Central African regional average.

UNICEF data reveals that only 40% to 57% of Nigerian children under the age of five are officially registered. Several systemic barriers continue to hinder universal registration efforts across the country. These include rural isolation and limited access to physical registry centres in remote areas.

Economic constraints also constitute a major challenge, as financial burdens and poverty prevent families from traveling to registration points. Added to this is low awareness regarding the long-term importance of vital statistics.

How the NPC Digital Platform Solves the Crisis

To combat these challenges, the NPC’s new digital registration platform streamlines the process for families. The initiative shifts from paper-based tracking to an integrated electronic system.

Key objectives of the 2026 digital rollout include easier access allowing parents to register newborns seamlessly without geographical barriers and aggressive awareness campaigns to educate parents on the benefits of early registration.

Birth registrations will also secure legal identity with parents who successfully registered their newborns, praised the initiative.

They noted that the digital certificates will secure their children’s future and grant them unhindered access to national facilities.

Aligning with Africa’s Decadal Vision

The 2026 rollout aligns directly with continental goals. This year marks the celebration of the Africa Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Day under a forward-looking theme. The 2026 theme focuses on: “New Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Decade, 2026–2036: Consolidating the Achievements of the Africa Programme on Accelerated Improvement of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Systems, and Securing the Future of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in Africa through Integration, Decentralisation and Digitalisation.”

Through this digital transition, Nigeria aims to lead West Africa in modernizing vital statistics and securing a legal identity for the next generation.
