Nigeria 2027: INEC Begins Nationwide Zonal Readiness Assessment in Southwest

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially shifted its focus to the 2027 General Election, launching a comprehensive zonal assessment strategy to evaluate its administrative, human, and logistical preparedness across the country.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, commenced the evaluation tour in the Southwest zone, engaging directly with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), Electoral Officers (EOs), and field staff.

The commission has already locked in key dates for the upcoming polls, with the presidential and national assembly elections scheduled for 16 January 2027, followed by the governorship and state houses of assembly elections.

A Race Against Time: Why INEC is Adopting a Zonal Strategy

In a departure from traditional state-by-state tours, the electoral umpire is adopting a streamlined zonal approach. Prof. Amupitan explained that the decision was driven by the strict timeline remaining before citizens head to the polls.

The zonal engagements are designed to give leadership a first-hand look at local operations and eliminate operational bottlenecks early.

“It is very critical for me to go and see for myself and be sure that we are physically, psychologically, materially, and infrastructurally ready for the 2027 General Election,” the INEC Chairman stated.

Strengthening the ‘Foot Soldiers’ of Nigeria’s Democracy

During his meeting with officials, Prof. Amupitan placed a heavy emphasis on the role of grassroots election managers. He described electoral officers at the local government level as the commission’s crucial “foot soldiers” who translate national policies into executed actions on election day.

Acknowledging that the administrative layer of election management has historically been overlooked, the Chairman warned that lapses at the local level could jeopardize the integrity of the entire process. EOs operate within a strict chain of responsibility, reporting directly to their respective RECs, who in turn answer to the national headquarters.

“Their role has always not been emphasised before now,” Amupitan noted. “But we know that if the chain is broken, then the election will run into crisis.”

Eliminating Gaps for a Seamless Vote

The readiness assessment will systematically review every phase of the electoral chain, focusing heavily on staff coordination, administrative efficiency, and policy implementation.

By engaging directly with field partners and officials now, INEC aims to clarify institutional responsibilities and reinforce coordination well ahead of January 2027. Prof. Amupitan assured stakeholders that the commission is systematically addressing infrastructure and material needs to prevent logistics failures.

“We want to address every chain, every aspect of the election, and ensure that we have a seamless general election in 2027,” he concluded.
