NDC Downplays Members’ Defections, Blasts ‘Dying’ Ruling APC Over Material Incentives

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The political landscape in Nigeria has erupted into a fierce war of words, with the opposition Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) launching a scathing attack on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over a wave of high-profile defections.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NDC National Publicity Secretary Osa Director Esq. dismissed the departing politicians, declaring their exit as “good riddance to bad rubbish.”

The opposition claims the APC is panicking ahead of the upcoming elections and deploying desperate, deep-pocketed tactics to stay afloat.

The NDC accused the ruling party of weaponizing state machinery and financial resources to strip the opposition of its candidates.

According to Director, the APC has resorted to distributing massive cash payouts, dangling lucrative political appointments, and offering material incentives to lure vulnerable politicians.

“The NDC is fully aware of the desperate and malicious tactics of the APC, which has resorted to offering money, political appointments, and other material incentives to induce some money-minded candidates of our party to jump ship and defect to its sinking fold,” Director stated fiercely.

He slammed the defectors as mercenary politicians who lacked ideological backbone, adding that they were “never truly of us” and wishing them luck in their “political misadventures.”

Rather than mourning the loss of its candidates, the NDC says it is using the departures to completely purge and reboot its ranks.

Invoking the statutory provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, the opposition leadership announced it is immediately triggering fresh party congresses to replace the defectors with “credible, competent, and trustworthy” candidates across all affected constituencies.

As political tensions hit a boiling point, the NDC urged its nationwide base to remain completely unfazed by the APC’s poaching strategy, mocking the ruling party’s efforts as the futile, desperate gasps of a collapsing regime.

Reaffirming its vow to unseat the current administration, the NDC promised to replace the current governance with ironclad national security, economic prosperity, and strict accountability.

“The NDC remains resolutely committed to its historic mission of rescuing our country from the vice grip of the buccaneers in power,” Director concluded, rallying the faithful with the party’s signature battle cry: “A New Nigeria is possible. We can do it!”
