‘My Daddy is Dead’: Daughter’s Tearful Broadcast Confirms the Passing of Nollywood Legend Ogogo at 66
The curtains have officially closed on one of the greatest eras in Nigerian cinema with the passing of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, famously known as Ogogo, who died at the age of 66 on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after a brave battle with stage-four cancer.
His daughter, Kira Taiwo, broke the tragic news through a tearful and deeply emotional social media broadcast, sending shockwaves through millions of fans who grew up watching his iconic, principled screen performances.
Hassan starred in over 150 movies. In his illustrious career spanning over 42 years. He evolved from a part-time theater enthusiast into one of the most revered symbols of discipline and integrity in indigenous Yoruba cinema.
He initially combined acting with his 13-year civil service job as an auto-mechanic at the Lagos State Water Corporation.
Ogogo later resigned from his stable government employment in 1994 to commit entirely to full-time acting.
Among his early works is “Owo Blow,” his 1994 breakthrough flick.
His superlative performance earned him widespread recognition, a THEMA Best Actor award, and firmly established his moniker “Ogogo” across Nigeria.
Recently, he featured in Kunle Afolayan’s Netflix original film Aníkúlápó (2022), which earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
He has won several awards and is recognized as one of the legends of Nollywood.
