Manchester United out of Carabao Cup

Manchester United’s misery continued into the Carabao Cup as they were knocked out of the competition in the third round by Brighton & Hove Albion, compounding a depressing start for the Old Trafford side.

United had taken a commanding two-goal lead earlier in the game through an 8th-minute opener from Shea Lacey and a quick follow-up by Mason Mount in the 10th minute.

However, Brighton clawed their way back to equalize and eventually win the tie 3-2. The comeback began just before half-time when Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit.

Brighton’s skipper Pascal Groß then leveled the match in the 65th minute, before substitute Maxim De Cuyper completed the stunning turnaround just four minutes later. The defeat effectively knocks United out of the EFL Cup, raising more questions about Michael Carrick’s men and their ambitions for the new season.

This cup exit follows a similarly unimpressive start to life in the Premier League, where they have won only one game out of four and find themselves sandwiched at 13th on the league table.

In other EFL Cup games played on Wednesday night, Fleetwood Town defeated Sheffield United 1-0, Coventry City lost 1-3 at home to Aston Villa, while Everton defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0.
