Respected elder statesman and former leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, has passed away at the age of 100.

Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in a statement released on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, who confirmed his passing, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the centenarian as a patriarch and a beacon of wisdom, integrity, and selfless service.

“With a heavy heart but with total submission to the will of God, I announce the passing of our revered elder statesman, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who departed this world at the glorious age of 100,” the Governor stated.

Pa Fasoranti’s century-long life was defined by his unwavering commitment to the development of Ondo State, Yorubaland, and Nigeria as a whole. As a highly respected political leader and educationist, his principled stance on issues of justice, democracy, and good governance earned him nationwide admiration.

Governor Aiyedatiwa noted that the elder statesman’s fatherly guidance and sharp counsel would be deeply missed across the country.

“He lived a fulfilled life and left indelible footprints of honour and legacy for generations to come,” Aiyedatiwa added.

Details regarding his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and the Ondo State government in due course.

A Legacy of Service

Born on May 11, 1926, Pa Fasoranti was a foundational pillar of the progressive ideals of the late Yoruba sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Following the death of Pa Abraham Adesanya, Fasoranti emerged as the substantive National Leader of the group, navigating it through critical periods of political restructuring and national advocacy.

Under his stewardship, Afenifere remained a powerful voice demanding true federalism, good governance, and democratic equity across Nigeria. Even as internal leadership alignments evolved—such as his 2021 appointment of Chief Ayo Adebanjo as acting leader—Pa Fasoranti retained his position as the supreme patriarch and unifying force of the organisation.

In the political sphere, Pa Fasoranti was a strong voice during the oppressive military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha, and as a prominent leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), he actively resisted authoritarian rule to usher in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

His unwavering stance for democracy made him a target of the military regime, famously surviving an assassination attempt in 1996.
