UEFA Nations League: Big Wins for Poland and Belgium as France and Italy Share Spoils
Friday’s headline match in the UEFA Nations League between France and Italy ended in a 1-1 draw as both teams tried to outfox each other.
The French side was without its talisman, Kylian Mbappé, who had left the camp due to a knee injury following their opening match.
Michael Olise opened the scoring for France early in the second half, turning home a pass from Rayan Cherki in the 55th minute. However, the lead was canceled out by Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni just 13 minutes later with a clinical equalizer.
In the other match of League A, Group 1, Belgium beat Türkiye 3-0 to move into second place with 6 points. Italy sits third with 4 points, while Türkiye remains at the bottom with zero points. France currently tops the group with 7 points.
Across the other fixtures, Hungary edged out a close victory with a 1-0 win against Georgia, while Northern Ireland delivered a dominant performance to defeat Ukraine 3-0 in Slovakia.
Meanwhile, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sweden could not be separated, settling for a point each in a 1-1 draw.
Poland emerged as the biggest winner of the night, showcasing a ruthless attack by putting six goals past Romania in a 6-0 thrashing behind a Robert Lewandowski hat-trick. In contrast, Cyprus secured a comfortable clean-sheet victory by beating Armenia 2-0.
The match between the Faroe Islands and Slovakia ended in a resilient 1-1 draw, while Moldova narrowly edged out Kazakhstan with a 2-1 win. Finally, Montenegro got the better of Latvia to claim all three points in another close 2-1 encounter
