South Africa Serial Killer Fears Grow After 9th Victim Discovered

Fear is gripping South Africa following a horrific spate of murders in Gauteng’s East Rand, sparking international outrage and growing concerns that a serial killer may be actively targeting women.

The crisis intensified after the body of a ninth victim was discovered on Thursday morning in Dawn Park, Boksburg. While the South African Police Service (SAPS) maintains that it is too early to definitively confirm a single serial killer, a high-level multidisciplinary task force has been deployed to investigate whether the grim string of deaths across the Ekurhuleni area are connected.

Horrific Discoveries Spark Urgent Police Investigation

Public panic escalated dramatically after the latest victim was found half-naked and wrapped in a sheet on the side of a road in Dawn Park. Forensic teams noted visible signs of trauma, including a slit throat. Authorities believe the location was used as a dumping ground, a pattern observed in several of the other cases.

As the death toll has reached nine women since July, law enforcement has launched a massive manhunt, offering a R400,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.

The horrifying developments have drawn sharp international scrutiny. Nelson Muffuh, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in South Africa, alongside UN Women, issued a joint statement demanding immediate accountability and decisive action from local authorities.

While Muffuh acknowledged South Africa’s previous declaration of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide as a national disaster, he challenged the government to move beyond rhetoric and deliver tangible access to justice and safety for women.

A Dark History: South Africa’s Most Notorious Serial Killers

This latest crisis reopens deep wounds in a country that has historically battled some of the world’s most prolific serial killers:

• Moses Sithole (The ABC Killer): Active between 1994 and 1995, Sithole is known as “The South African Strangler.” He was convicted of murdering at least 38 women and one toddler.

• Thozamile Taki (The Sugarcane Killer): Taki lured victims with false job promises before murdering 13 women. He dumped their bodies in sugarcane and tea plantations across KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, resulting in 13 life sentences.

• Richard Nyauza: Operating between 2002 and 2006, Nyauza terrorized the Pretoria region, murdering 16 women in and around the Rossway Quarry.

• Jacques Coetzee and John Frank Brown: Dubbed “The Cross-Dressing Killers,” the duo was convicted of murdering five men in Johannesburg between 1993 and 1995.

As forensic investigations continue across Ekurhuleni, pressure is mounting on South African law enforcement to bring an end to the violence before more lives are lost.
