Scale and Speed: Why Aliko Dangote Belongs in China’s Corner
“….. China supplied us 10,250 trucks in 7 months; it is only China that you can get this kind of scale.” — Aliko Dangote
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has mounted a staunch defense of Beijing’s economic footprint in Africa, asserting that Western critics fundamentally underestimate the scale, speed, and quality of Chinese manufacturing.
Speaking at the Semafor World Economy Summit, the Nigerian industrialist dismissed long-standing Western anxieties regarding Chinese influence on the continent. Instead, he framed Beijing’s involvement as a pragmatic partnership born out of Western neglect.
“The case between Africa and China is a case where everybody is sort of abandoning you, and somebody comes to you to say, ‘Okay, fine, you know what? Let us partner,'” Dangote told the audience.
The Scale Advantage
To illustrate his point, Dangote highlighted a massive logistics order placed by his conglomerate, the Dangote Group.
“If I come to the US and I want to buy 10,000 trucks, it might take a year or a year and a half before Mack [Trucks] can deliver,” Dangote explained. “In China, in seven months, they supplied us with 10,250 trucks. It is only in China that you can get this kind of scale.”
Beyond sheer volume, the billionaire businessman challenged the outdated narrative that Chinese imports are inherently low quality. He emphasized that global perceptions have failed to keep pace with China’s domestic technological advancement, pointing directly to the global electric vehicle market.
“When you go to China, the quality of what they are producing is amazing,” Dangote said. “Even today, you go and look at BYD. I don’t want to make a judgment between BYD and Tesla—there’s a big difference. I don’t want to say which one is better; I don’t want to be sued.”
When the interviewer jokingly interjected that Dangote likely did not want to upset Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Dangote laughed. “No, I’m not saying anything,” he joked, before reiterating, “People are really underrating China.”
Financing the Future
A critical pillar of China’s success in Africa, according to Dangote, is its highly efficient financial framework. While Western capital is often tied up in bureaucratic red tape and stringent political conditions, Chinese credit lines offer a more direct path to industrialization.
“We get credit lines from China; they finance, they deliver on time,” Dangote noted. He added a caveat for African buyers, stating that achieving high-quality results requires active oversight: “If you know what you’re doing or what you are buying, the Chinese will also deliver quality.”
When pressed by the interviewer on whether Chinese investments on the continent truly meet international standards, Dangote’s response was unequivocal. “The quality is very good.”

Question: What’s your perception of the Chinese presence in Africa, and is it something that America should be concerned about?
Aliko Dangote: You see, the case between Africa and China is the case of where everybody is sort of abandoning you and somebody is coming to you to say, “Okay, fine, you know what? Let us partner, we want to offer you XYZ.” We get credit lines from China; they finance and they deliver on time. And if you know what you’re doing or what you are buying, the Chinese will also deliver quality.
You see, a lot of people have maybe not visited China. I’m sure half of this hall have never ever been to China, but when you go to China, the quality of what they are producing is amazing. I mean, even today, you go and look at BYD—I don’t want to make a judgment between BYD and Tesla; there’s a big difference. I don’t want to say which one is better; I don’t want to be sued. (Audience laughter)
Interviewer: I’m not sure you want to upset Elon Musk.
Aliko Dangote: No, I’m not saying anything. (More laughter) So when you look at it, people are really underrating China. Look at some of the things—if I come to the US and I want to buy 10,000 trucks, it might take a year or a year and a half before Mack [Trucks] can deliver those trucks. In China, in seven months, they supplied us with 10,250 trucks. So, it is only in China that you can get this kind of scale.
Interviewer: But the Chinese investment actually in Africa is quality as well?
Aliko Dangote: The quality is very good!
