Nigeria Extends 2025 Budget Implementation to December 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially signed into law the Appropriation (Amendment) (No. 4) Bill, 2025, granting a three-month extension for the implementation of the 2025 national budget.

The presidential assent moves the budget’s expiration deadline from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026. The development follows an expedited legislative process in the National Assembly, where both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed the amendment bill on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, the extension is designed to prevent the disruption of critical public programmes.

Specifically, the adjustment provides federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) with the necessary legal framework and time to finalize capital projects that are already underway across the country.

“The extension ensures that funds already appropriated are fully put to work for Nigerians,” Onanuga stated, emphasizing the administration’s focus on maximizing public expenditure value without halting ongoing execution.

President Tinubu commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for their swift consideration and passage of the bill.

The Presidency characterized the rapid legislative turnaround as a clear demonstration of sustained collaboration and cooperative governance between the executive and legislative arms of government.

With the amendment now active, federal MDAs will continue utilizing capital allocations from the 2025 fiscal year until the close of December 2026.
