ABUJA, Nigeria—Nigeria’s economy is experiencing steady acceleration, and the federal government is saying this firmly places it on track toward its ambitious goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday, Nigeria’s real GDP expanded by 4.43 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026.

It marks a significant increase from the 4.23 per cent growth recorded in Q2 2025 and the 3.89 per cent growth seen in Q1 2026.

The impressive Q2 performance has elevated real GDP growth for the first half of 2026 (H1 2026) to 4.16 per cent, up from 3.68 per cent during the same period last year.

Weighing into the development, the Federal Ministry of Finance explained that the growth is significant due to how diversified it is across different sectors.

A statement posted by the Minister of Finance Taiwo Oyedele highlights the broad-based expansion to include 27 economic subsectors, which recorded real growth above 3.0 percent in Q2 2026, compared to 23 subsectors in Q2 2025.

These include manufacturing, which grew by 3.24 percent, more than doubling the 1.60 percent recorded in Q2 2025.

Despite insecurity in most parts of Nigeria’s farming zones, the agriculture sector also experienced a 4.39 per cent expansion, up from 2.82 per cent, signaling stronger value-chain performance.

The services sector maintained its dominance as the largest driver of economic growth, recording a 4.60 percent expansion, up from 3.94 percent.

Stronger Naira Boosts Dollar-Denominated Wealth

Taking credit for the improvements, the Tinubu administration credited reforms in the exchange for the macroeconomic gains.

It noted that the Naira appreciated by more than 12 percent between H1 2025 and H1 2026.

In dollar terms, the government is boasting of economic growth and downsizing by approximately 17 percent over the same period.

Global Recognition: Top 10 Growth Contributor

Quoting the recent ranking of Nigeria among top 10 contributors to real gdp in 2026 by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Finance Ministry is confident that with sustained macroeconomic stability, improved investor confidence, and sector-wide policy consistency, Nigeria is well-positioned to officially become Africa’s largest economy by 2028.

To this end, it emphasized that the government remains laser-focused on sustaining crucial reforms to ensure macroeconomic gains “successfully translate into shared prosperity for every Nigerian household.”
