Legendary Broadcaster Christiane Amanpour, Set to Leave CNN
Christiane Amanpour has announced that she will be leaving CNN after a storied 43-year career at the network.
In a statement shared with colleagues and the public, the 68-year-old Chief International Anchor jokingly played on the length of her tenure, writing, “After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years!”
According to internal memos from CNN CEO Mark Thompson and Amanpour herself, her exit will be a phased transition over the next several months. By December 2026, her daily global interview programme, Amanpour, on CNN International and her PBS show, Amanpour & Company, will officially concluded.
She will then scale back her broadcasting to host a weekly programme on CNN from January 2027. The weekly programme is scheduled to end in May 2027, and by June 2027, Amanpour will have fully departed the network after completing a smooth transition.
A Legacy of Conflict and Truth
Amanpour started at CNN in 1983 as an entry-level assistant on the international assignment desk. Over the course of four decades, she became one of the most recognizable and venerated conflict journalists in the world, bringing viewers on-the-ground reporting from major historical events, including the First Gulf War, the Bosnian War, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Iran.
In her farewell address, she left her colleagues with a powerful reminder of her career-long journalistic philosophy: “Remember: always be truthful, not neutral.”
Amanpour noted that she does not intend to retire and looks forward to “interesting new projects down the line.” Her exit comes during a major shifting point for the network, just weeks after Skydance completed its massive buyout of CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery.
