A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, has died after suspected cultists opened fire on the convoy of the Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, in Oja Oba, Osogbo, on Wednesday.

Preliminary investigation by the police also says Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, was the main target of the attack.

This was confirmed by the public relations officer Abiodun Ojelabiz.

The incident happened during the visit of the Governor to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, shortly after the issuance of the Certificate of Return to the Governor by INEC.

Eyewitnesses said the gunfire lasted over 10 minutes.

Providing details of the incident, the police said suspected members of the Eiye confraternity were behind the shooting.

A certain Taoreed Adebayo, identified as an ex-convict and a thug, is said to have instigated the incident after he was denied access to the music star. The situation quickly escalated into a confrontation with other suspected gang members joining the fracas, blocking the entrance to the palace and impeding the convoy of the governor.

The situation led to an exchange of gunfire between the hoodlums and the security detail of the governor.

The suspected gang members are said to have shot Tajudeen Yusuf in the Itaolokan area of Osogbo. He was later pronounced dead at the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.

The police command has assured that the incident is under active investigation towards identifying all those involved and bringing them to book.
