Benue Assembly Majority Leader Thomas Dugeri Defects from APC to PDP

Makurdi, NIGERIA — In a major political shakeup ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Majority Leader of the Benue State House of Assembly, Thomas Dugeri, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Dugeri, who represents the Kwande West State Constituency, was officially presented to the immediate past Governor of Benue State and state PDP leader, Samuel Ortom, in Abuja by the State PDP Deputy Chairman, Adzua Ashongo.

PDP Welcomes Dugeri, Cites Growing Party Confidence

Reacting to the development, the Benue State chapter of the PDP issued a statement through its Publicity Secretary, Bright Yima Antyo, welcoming the lawmaker into its fold.

The party described Dugeri’s defection as a significant milestone in Benue’s shifting political landscape, labeling it a clear sign of growing public confidence in the PDP as a credible platform for inclusive leadership and good governance.

“As a serving Majority Leader, his decision to leave the APC and identify with the PDP is particularly significant,” the statement read.
