Back for Good: Cancelo’s Barcelona Return Completes Flick’s Championship Puzzle
Last-Minute Drama at the Camp Nou
Cancelo’s third stint in Catalonia did not arrive without classic Barcelona administrative drama. The full-back arrived in Spain earlier in the week and even suited up in his preferred No. 2 shirt in the tunnel ahead of the Joan Gamper Trophy friendly against Egypt’s Al-Ahly.
However, late bureaucratic delays regarding counter-signed release documents from Al-Hilal forced Barcelona to bar him from the pitch at the last second.
A visibly fuming Cancelo was caught on camera storming back down the tunnel. Fortunately for Culers, those administrative hurdles were entirely cleared on Thursday, and the transfer is now 100% official.
Why Hansi Flick Pushed For The Deal
Cancelo originally joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester City for the 2023–24 season. He returned for a second loan spell under Hansi Flick in January 2026, making 23 appearances and proving critical in helping the team retain their La Liga title.
Following the summer departure of Ronald Araújo, securing Cancelo’s tactical elite awareness was deemed paramount for the upcoming 2026–27 campaign.
Cancelo’s tactical flexibility and his ability to operate at an elite level on both the left and right flanks made him a defensive asset for Flick.
Defensively, he will be competing directly with Alejandro Balde at left-back while providing cover for Jules Koundé.
Part of a Blockbuster Summer Block
Cancelo’s signing caps off an extraordinary, star-studded summer transfer window orchestrated by Deco and club president Joan Laporta.
The full-back joins a star-studded list of new arrivals at the Spotify Camp Nou that includes Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Jesse Bisiwu, and Spanish midfield maestro Rodri.
With the paperwork finally rubber-stamped, Cancelo is expected to be rushed straight into Flick’s matchday squad as Barcelona prepares to kick off their league season.
