Afrophobia: Another Nigerian Brutally Killed in South Africa
Tensions have flared once again within the Nigerian community following the brutal killing of a 34-year-old Nigerian national, Christian Nnaemeka, by an anti-immigrant vigilante group in Johannesburg.
Nnaemeka, a married father of a three-year-old son, was allegedly attacked and killed on Monday, September 21, 2026, in the Primrose neighborhood of Johannesburg.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) confirmed the incident, identifying the alleged attackers as members of the notorious “Sizokthola” group, a radical anti-immigrant mob led by Xolani Khumalo.
According to an official statement released by NUSA, Nnaemeka was a native of Enugu-Ezike, located in the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria.
Outrage and Demands for an Independent Probe
The tragic incident has sparked widespread anger across the Nigerian community in South Africa, prompting NUSA to issue an uncompromising demand for a transparent, comprehensive, and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nnaemeka’s death.
“We demand that every person connected to this incident be identified and properly investigated,” NUSA stated. “If anyone is found to have acted unlawfully, that person must face the full weight of the law, regardless of position, influence, or affiliation.”
The union has raised critical questions regarding the legitimacy of the vigilante action, demanding official clarification on whether the raid on Primrose was part of an authorized law enforcement operation or a lawless act of xenophobic violence.
A Call for Accountability and Justice
While NUSA emphasized its support for lawful initiatives aimed at curbing drug trafficking and local crime, it strongly condemned the extrajudicial tactics employed by vigilante groups. The union stressed that criminal allegations must strictly be handled through due process, rather than taking human lives.
“We demand answers. We demand accountability. We demand justice. For Christian Hilary Nnaemeka. For his family. And for every Nigerian living in South Africa,” the statement concluded.
