Tinubu’s Campaign Council Demands Peter Obi’s Resignation From Presidential Race
ABUJA—The APC Presidential Campaign Council has launched a fierce attack on the financial record of New Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi, demanding his immediate resignation from the 2027 presidential race following official disclosures by the Anambra State Government.
In a stinging press statement released on September 21, 2026, Campaign Spokesman Dele Alake stated that the narrative of exceptional fiscal prudence built around Obi’s eight-year tenure as governor has been “torn to shreds.”
Referring to figures released by the Anambra State Government in response to Obi’s challenge to verify his record, the APC PCC repeated the claim that Obi spent approximately USD 4.05 billion (N5.4 trillion) and contracted USD 123.77 million in external loans during his time in office.
Unserviced Debts and Salary Arrears
The APC argued that the state government’s disclosures revealed that when Obi left office on March 17, 2014, Anambra was saddled with eight different external borrowings meant for malaria eradication, erosion control, education, and healthcare infrastructure.
The APC statement noted that subsequent administrations, including that of sitting Governor Chukwuma Soludo, have continued to service these external liabilities. “Borrowing is not injudicious if used for development,” Alake said. “But for a man who prides himself on being austere and has frequently claimed he left the state with a clean bill of health, the revelations confirmed what has long been held: Obi is an irredeemable liar, a mediocre governor, unfit for leadership anywhere.”
The Leaked 2006 Water Corporation Memo
The campaign further challenged Obi’s assertions that he never owed civil servant salaries, unearthing an internal memorandum dated April 25, 2006. It pleaded a memo, allegedly written by Obi’s then-Chief of Staff, Chuks Ileogbunam, during Obi’s second month in office, requesting the governor to pay a N15 million monthly salary deficit to striking Water Corporation workers to avert protests at the governor’s office.
The APC noted that despite Obi’s campaign promises to resign as governor if workers were ever unpaid, he failed to resolve the disputes, leaving heavier arrears for his successors to clear upon his departure in 2014.
Call for Resignation from 2027 Race
The APC campaign urged Obi to “purge himself of his lies” and apologize to the people of Anambra. The statement also slammed Obi’s recent solidarity visit to an unnamed political figure currently facing an EFCC trial for unexplained wealth and corruption.
Citing Obi’s public pledge to withdraw from the presidential race if it was ever proven that his administration left behind a debt burden, Alake concluded: “If Peter Obi has any honour, he must resign from the 2027 presidential race forthwith, in keeping with his promise to end his run if it is proven that his administration left behind liabilities in Anambra.”
Peter Obi’s Response
Peter Obi has yet to respond to the APC’s latest statement. However, the press release by the PCC mirrors similar ones made by Obi’s latter successor in Anambra State—Governor Chukwuma Soludo last week.
Obi, in his response, had described the figures paraded by his state government as “phantom debts and creative accounting.”
He further challenged the administration to publish documentary evidence proving his administration left behind unpaid liabilities to contractors, suppliers, workers, or pensioners, declaring that he will stop campaigning if anybody can establish anything to the contrary.
