Tesla Shows Off Flying Roadster Car That Goes 0 to 60 MPH in Under 1 Second

Tesla has officially shown off its new Roadster, a car that CEO Elon Musk says is made for real pilots.

The electric supercar mixes regular car design with SpaceX rocket technology. It uses smart air movements, a special ground-suction system, and small rocket thrusters to help the car lift off the ground and fly.

The new Roadster comes in three different models made for regular roads, racetracks, or the air.

Space-Age Look and Design

The outside of the Roadster has a clean, simple look with hidden headlights, a long taillight, and smooth sides. It is covered in a special “Ano White” paint borrowed from spaceships to protect it from extreme cold and rust. The windows have a golden tint that looks exactly like the copper coating on astronaut helmets.

Inside, the cabin is stripped down to make it as light as possible. It features bright white seats with gray suede accents that help hold the driver tightly in place.

To save weight, the seats do not move, and the buttons are all manual. Tesla built the car out of ultra-light, super-strong materials like carbon fiber and titanium so the vehicle can react to the driver instantly.

Three Models: Road, Track, and Sky

Tesla is making three versions of the Roadster for different types of extreme speed. The first model is the Performance version, which is built for regular roads. It has two seats and uses smart airflow to stay glued to the ground, allowing it to go from 0 to 60 mph in under 1.6 seconds.

The next model is the Thrust version, which is built for racing. It also has two seats but adds small rocket thrusters to the back of the car. This extra power shoots the car from 0 to 60 mph in less than 0.9 seconds.

The final model is the Rocket version, which is made for the air. This model only has one seat. It puts rocket thrusters all around the car so it can move forward, up, and sideways. Tesla says this version can actually fly, goes from 0 to 60 mph in under 0.59 seconds, and reaches top speeds over 230 mph.

All three versions can drive more than 300 miles on a single battery charge.

“The Future Has Flying Cars”

After the reveal, Elon Musk posted a video online showing what the flying version can do. In the video, the Rocket model launched into the air and flew right over a line of other Tesla vehicles, including the Cybertruck and the Model 3. The car even did a full barrel roll in midair just like an airplane.

Musk wrote that the future finally has flying cars, marking a huge moment for the vehicle he promised years ago would beat gas-powered supercars.
