South-East Security Crisis: Group Demands Coordinated Action Following Discovery of 28 Human Skulls

ABUJA—The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has issued an urgent appeal to the five South-East governors, imploring them to set aside political divisions and confront an escalating security threat.

The warning follows a horrific discovery by security operatives, who recovered twenty-eight human skulls and extensive human remains from deep within suspected criminal hideouts in the Umuaku and Nneato forests, located in the Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.

The association is warning that regional economic paralysis looms if violent criminal camps in Umuaku and Nneato forests are not dismantled immediately.

According to a statement signed by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the gruesome find highlights a critical breaking point for regional stability.

The association noted that local communities are facing unprecedented perils that can only be mitigated through unified executive leadership.

HURIWA called for increased regional cooperation among the governors of the region on intelligence harmonization for a centralized data-sharing system across all six states to track cross-border criminal movements.

It also recommended tactical coordination for synchronized security sweeps across contiguous forest reserves in the zones as well as logistical reinforcements through funding, vehicular support, and tactical communication assets to frontline security agencies.

Beyond the immediate humanitarian tragedy, the rights group raised serious warnings about the long-term economic paralysis gripping the South-East region. HURIWA stressed that commercial infrastructure, agricultural output, and external investments are direct casualties of unchecked violence.

“No geographical region can realistically attract foreign investment, build sustainable job markets, or achieve meaningful civic development when its citizens fear traveling, farming, or returning to their ancestral homes,” Onwubiko stated.

Addressing localized security initiatives, HURIWA strictly cautioned governors against turning state-backed vigilante groups into political foot soldiers or instruments to settle partisan scores.

While affirming that community security networks can offer vital support to conventional federal forces, the group asserted that the units must remain strictly bound by professional rules of engagement, formal human rights training, and rigid institutional oversight.
