Olu Jacobs: President Tinubu Mourns Iconic Actor
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the passing of legendary Nollywood actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (popularly known as Olu Jacobs), who died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the age of 84.
In a statement released by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late thespian as a “giant of the Nigerian creative industry” and a towering global figure whose remarkable career transformed theatre, television, and film.
A Global Legacy in Acting
Olu Jacobs’ journey into acting began with formal training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London. He went on to build a successful early career, appearing in British television and international cinema before returning to Nigeria.
Upon his return, he became a foundational pillar and pioneering force in the growth of Nollywood. His exceptional talent, discipline, and dedication to his craft earned him numerous high-profile industry honors, as well as the national award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
President Tinubu Pays Tribute: President Tinubu praised the late actor’s unique ability to bring depth, dignity, and authenticity to every character he portrayed, noting that he inspired multiple generations of filmmakers and actors.
“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry,” President Tinubu stated. “His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry, and the global community of lovers of the performing arts. His remarkable body of work will continue to speak to generations yet unborn.”
The president also emphasized the vital role creative practitioners play in shaping Nigeria’s cultural identity, global image, and economic development, highlighting that Olu Jacobs was instrumental in building that foundation.
