NEMA, Cross River Stage Rescue Simulation Ahead of Peak Rainy Season

CALABAR, Nigeria — In a proactive move to mitigate the impact of impending flash floods, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Cross River State Government have conducted a comprehensive flood rescue simulation exercise for residents in high-risk areas of Calabar.

The emergency drill comes as authorities intensify disaster preparedness ahead of the peak rainy season, traditionally expected between August and September.

Testing the Rescue Chain

The live exercise simulated a real-time disaster scenario, demonstrating the synchronized emergency chain required to save lives during a flood crisis.

The operational drill highlighted the coordination between three critical tiers of response:

• First Responders: Local divers executing immediate water rescues.
• ⁠State Coordination: The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) manages localized relief and logistics.
• ⁠Federal Support: NEMA providing national resources and strategic backup.

For vulnerable Calabar residents, the simulation served as a practical, lifesaving lesson in evacuation procedures, rescue coordination, and personal safety.

Government Pledges Temporary Shelters

Speaking at the event, the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, emphasized the administration’s commitment to protecting citizens.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Anthony Owan-Enoh, the Governor announced that the state is already preparing internal displacement venues.

Plans are underway to temporarily convert designated primary schools and community halls into safe shelters for residents who may be forced from their homes.

Director-General of Cross River SEMA, James Effa Nyong, described the simulation as a vital, eye-opening exercise for community preparedness. He noted that with floodwaters already threatening several communities across the state, emergency managers must shift their focus from merely reacting to disasters to actively anticipating and preventing them.

Community Ready for Evacuation

Local participants expressed relief following the exercise, noting that the hands-on demonstration cleared up confusion regarding emergency contacts and evacuation routes.

With meteorologists predicting heavy downpours in the coming weeks, state authorities are urging residents in flood-prone lowlands to remain vigilant, heed early warning signs, and prepare for potential temporary relocation.
