NDLEA Arrests Mexican Drug Kingpin Fleeing Nigeria, Smashes Meth Cartel
Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has dismantled a major international syndicate specializing in methamphetamine production, arresting a suspected Mexican drug kingpin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The suspect, identified as Arturo Carrera Loaiza, was intercepted by operatives on August 19 while attempting to flee the country following a tip-off regarding his illicit activities.
Forest Labs Uncovered across Three States
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), disclosed the breakthrough during a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. According to Marwa, the cartel’s transnational operations unravelled after operatives uncovered sophisticated, clandestine methamphetamine laboratories hidden deep inside forests across Ogun, Oyo, and Ebonyi states.
The timeline of the crackdown includes
On May 16, operatives busted a forest hideout in Ogun State, arresting three Mexican nationals and seven Nigerian accomplices. A day later, a laboratory was dismantled in a forested area of Tapa village, Ibarapa North LGA, Oyo State.
A massive industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory was uncovered in Ebonyi State, heavily linked to Loaiza’s network.
The breakthrough leading to Loaiza’s airport arrest followed the interrogation of Jose Villa Ochoa, a 56-year-old Mexican methamphetamine cook. Ochoa, who was arrested during the June raid at the Oyo State forest laboratory, confessed to investigators that he was recruited into Nigeria specifically for his technical expertise by Loaiza.
While Ochoa continues to assist the anti-graft agency with its ongoing investigations, Loaiza has denied the allegations. Upon his arrest, Loaiza claimed he was invited to Nigeria by a local contact named “Henry” under the guise of setting up a restaurant business.
With the assistance of international law enforcement partners, the NDLEA has successfully crippled the cartel’s expansion into Nigeria. Further investigations are underway to track down remaining local and international collaborators.
