MultiChoice to Localize Operations in Nigeria: Parent Company Bolloré Meets President Tinubu, Pledges Major Film & Infrastructure Investment
PARIS, France — In a major move for African broadcasting, MultiChoice is set to localize its operations in Nigeria following high-level talks between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and French billionaire Vincent Bolloré, head of the Bolloré Group.
The strategic meeting, held during the President’s working vacation in Paris, secured commitments from the global media giant—whose portfolio includes Canal+, MultiChoice, and Universal Music Group—to aggressively expand its footprint in Africa’s largest entertainment market.
The incoming multi-sector investments will specifically target localized film and entertainment production to create tailored Nigerian content, fibre-optic infrastructure to boost digital streaming capabilities, and local talent development pipelines to train the next generation of creatives.
Nigeria Named the Hub for Africa’s Cultural Renaissance
Mr. Bolloré and his executive team explicitly named Nigeria as the spearhead of Africa’s cultural renaissance. They cited the explosive global success of Nollywood and Afrobeats as the driving force behind a surging international demand for Nigerian content, making the country the logical baseline for their expanded African operations.
“Nigeria’s growing global cultural influence presents a historic opportunity to bring more production, investment, and jobs home.”
With the Bolloré Group’s heavy involvement in MultiChoice via Canal+, this hyper-localized push aims to solidify Nigeria as the primary base for serving both the African continent and the wider global market.
According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, the President strongly welcomed the expansion, emphasizing that under his Renewed Hope Agenda, Nigeria’s global cultural reach must directly translate into physical production assets, job creation for young Nigerians, and improved local livelihoods.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting investments that strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure.
