The death toll in Zimbabwe’s ferry accident has risen to 72 after 26 bodies were recovered from the lake.
The incident which occurred on Tuesday in Lake Kariba is said to have been caused by overloading. Authorites said the boat carried 154 people against its safe limit of 90.
77 people were rescued through the combined efforts of local divers, emergency crews and fishermen.
Among those dead were children. The boat was said to have capsized after running into rough waters shortly after departing the harbour. The government has declared the incident a national disaster.
