2027 Realignment: Former SGF Babachir Lawal Joins NDC, Backs Obi-Kwankwaso Ticket

In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The move comes three months after Lawal resigned his membership from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over internal friction regarding the party’s presidential primary.

Lawal announced his defection in Abuja on Tuesday following a high-profile meeting with the leadership of the NDC, led by the party’s National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson.

Driven by National Concerns

Speaking on his decision to return to active partisan politics, the former SGF revealed he had previously contemplated retirement from the political scene.

However, he reconsidered after reflecting on the prevailing socio-economic challenges confronting the nation.”My decision was influenced by deep concerns over the worsening security, economic, and social conditions in Nigeria,” Lawal stated.

He emphasized the urgent need for experienced stakeholders to actively participate in shaping the country’s future and ensuring better prospects for younger Nigerians.

He urged citizens who are concerned about hunger, insecurity, disease, and systemic governance failures to identify with the NDC as a viable alternative for national rescue.

Endorsement of the Obi–Kwankwaso Ticket

As part of his declaration, Lawal threw his full weight behind the NDC’s 2027 presidential ticket, which features former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to Lawal, the administrative track records of both Obi and Kwankwaso during their respective tenures as governors provide a solid blueprint for national transformation. He expressed strong optimism that their localized governance models could be successfully scaled up to remedy Nigeria’s structural challenges at the federal level.
